A documentary on the lives of Siddi people. Felt disjointed and episodic, but I think it was intended.

IFFK 2024 - Film #5
A very important film, that plays out more like a documentary(and I don’t mean this in a negative way), but then the surreal elements in the film elevate it to a higher state. My favourite portions of the film were the 2 musical sequences that come in the beginning and the closing moments of the film. It’s beautifully shot, and performed, and indeed justifies the title of Rhythm Of Dammam. You’d find yourself tapping your feet, without you even realising it. Also it’s the first time in the history the life of Siddi Community has been documented, in any kind of film, and that itself makes it a very important film to be seen and experienced.

From the rhythm of our ancestors through the rhythm of roots; in the rhythm of dammam

A beautiful representation of the Sidhi community from uthara Karnataka.
The film is very impressive, it shows how music is represented as their identity and a very un biased take on their community. -

29th IFFK #11
A fascinating docu-fiction film that stresses on the importance of self-discovery of a people. The opening frame of the film provides all the context you need - the Siddi community was brought to India as slaves from the African continent and has now been reintroduced as the same into the caste system. The protagonist's road to understanding of who he is is explored through supernatural elements that are derived from his history.

Easily my favorite movie shown at the iffk24.
There is this rich and heartbreaking display of intergenerational trauma and the longing for belonging throughout.
The music and dance that seemed to go on forever is something that in any other movie would've made me leave the theater. Absolutely loved everything about the movie and I hope they have a commercial release in Kerala so I can experience it in the big screen itself again. -
